General

What is group savings?

This is a centuries old way of savings where a group of people save and lend money to each other. There are 2 models; ROSCA ( Rotating Savings and Credit Associations) and ASCA  (Accumulating Savings and Credit Associations).
ROSCA - This is where the group forms a circle and each person contributes a specific amount of money, all amounts are combined together, and members of the circle get the whole payout one by one.

ASCA - This consisting of 15-30 people, where members regularly meet to save money in a common fund. This fund is used to make loans to group members. At the end of an established savings cycle - 9 to 12 months - the savings with accumulated interest and fees are shared out among the group members and a new cycle begins.

Savings groups are called Susu, Ajo and Tontines in West Africa, Gameya in North Africa, Chamas in East Africa and Stokvels in South Africa.
